SEMI ISOLATION OF SCUTTLE. X7830 X4613

With reference to Ev{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}2/13.6.28. The reason we recommended semi isolation instead of the scuttle damper was because we found it to be the more satisfactory of the two schemes on our experimental tests. The scuttle damper is excellent for transverse stiffening. However we have always found that we get better results if we allow the body to steady the dash in a fore and aft direction as well as the inclusion of transverse damping.

We do not think that any of the objections made to semi isolation can really be substantiated in practice, whereas, we are constantly having to deal with complaints against the complete isolation and dozens of customers cars have been altered to semi isolation in order to satisfy them. We have never found that the semi isolation scheme does anything but reduce bonnet knocks.

The radiator and steering column of the standard car already distort the dash more than any reasonable body could.

We have done many tests on the bump which indicate that there is not the least probability that the cast dash will crack when semi isolation is employed. We have never cracked a cast dash in any of our tests. 12-EX and 15-EX both have done thousands of miles with semi isolation and a cast dash.
