To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From G.W.H. Hotel de France, Chateauroux, FRANCE. 8.4.34. 28-EX. We are holding the car up today to attend to the following items:- (1) Rear Propeller Shaft Coupling. This has completely emptied during a day's run. We have taken drastic measures as the joint has been distorted and a .002" feeler could be inserted in between the bolts. We have soldered the joint up. (2) Exhaust Manifold. The rear joint was blowing due to the face - joint having a flaw in the face. This is being rebedded. (3) Petrol pumps. These have been giving out after coming down to slow speeds owing to the petrol boiling. We are fitting them up under the scuttle. (4) Steering. The steering is hopeless as it is. Severe kick backs from the wheel are frequent, knocks in the column sideways from the friction joint gives one the feeling that the steering is falling to pieces. The friction in the pivots has decreased to an extent that it now attempts to self centre. We are going over the whole job. (5) Rear Bracket for Snout - making a new one to replace one broken. (6) Stone Guards falling off - wing studs holding same broken. We are replacing the studs, previously we have thrown the guards away. (7) Hydraulic Control Pump. The loss of oil is probably due to oil being too high in the unit. We have noticed, while running, drops of oil coming from the overflow hole of the drive. The oil being the compressor oil and not gear oil. We shall lower the height and see whether this stops the leak. It may require venting. (8) Oil Consumption. This has become very poor - i.e. 288 MPG, also there is every indication that the piston rings have stuck. We shall therefore dismantle the engine. Hancock. G.W.H. | ||
