PHANTOM CHASSIS. LIGHTENED TYPE FRONT AXLE. BRAKE DRUM.
G.74256.

The Experimental Dept. are of the opinion that it may be necessary, as a result of more recent and fuller experience with the lightened front axle type of drum, to increase the thickness of the drum both on the side flange by which it is bolted to the hub, and also on the outside diameter of the brake drum itself.

At the moment the Experimental Dept. do not wish to commit themselves to a particular dimension.

Will the Works kindly let us know the latest date upon which it will be necessary for them to pick up the brake drums in order to complete them in time to fit on to the first chassis fitted with the lightened type of front axle, that is, the commencement of C.2. Series.

When we get this date, we on our part will obtain from the Experimental Dept. information to enable us to quote the correct thicknesses for the drums in question. We understand from enquiries made in the Works Office that none of the brake drums are at present machined.

The reason why the brake drums are being considered in regard to modifying their dimensions is to overcome squeaking which is set up after the brake shoes have worn somewhat.
