CHEMICAL ANALYSIS.
Carbon .41 %
Nickel 3.48 %
Chromium .62 %
Vanadium %
Tungsten %
Manganese .45 %
Silicon .21 %
Sulphur .032 %
Phosphorus .037 %
Remarks, etc.
The analysis is practically normal. Carbon on high side of specification, manganese rather less.
Microscopically, the steel in the vicinity of cracks, was found to be segregated - manganese sulphide + phosphide eutectic being evident.
Incorrect heat treatment was also indicated, since the steel was more troostitic than usual.
(Though this is less evident away from segregated areas).
