The engine of this car will not do more than 400 M.P.G. of oil after extensive work has been carried out. It would be very valuable if the Experimental Department could have this engine for further investigation. The car has been returned to Derby for a new engine to be fitted owing to the time factor being limited. The following work has been carried out at Kingsbury with no results, 400 M.P.G. still being the result:- (1) New ground cylinder (standard bore) fitted. new pistons and rings } no result. new grummets to valves } (2) 2nd ground cylinder (standard bore), hammered stressed rings fitted to pistons) no result. (3) Crankshaft main bearings taken up - no result. (4) Oversize .010 reground cylinder and pistons fitted - no results. (5) Engine dismantled - main journals found badly ringed, smoothed up and new bearings fitted throughout, tested for oil leaks. New rods fitted. New set of rings to pistons (no results) 400 M.P.G. There is no abnormal exhaust smoke after idling, slight blue haze at speed. No external oil leaks could be located. The cylinder distortion I showed to you when at Derby. (6) A new cylinder head fitted gave no better results for distortion. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} | ||
