C O P Y. G & J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Weir Ltd., Engineers, Cathcart, Glasgow. 18th. Jan. 1923. Messrs: Rolls-Royce Ltd., Nightingale Rd. Derby. Dear Sirs, Ref. Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}6/NJ17.1.23. As requested in yours of 17th.inst., we have pleasure in enclosing herewith three copies of our Booklet, MM1, which gives particulars of our Monel Metal. You will find the co-efficient of expansion given on page 19, also the heat conductivity. You will notice that the latter is low and if the tubes are used for purposes where conduction is important this must be kept in view. We find that owing to the great strength of monel over copper, much thinner tubes can be used and this also matters when surface heat transmission is involved. We regret that we cannot at present quote you for solid drawn monel metal tubes. These tubes have been made, but the commercial production is still only in the development stage. We have had good deliveries of tubes, acetylene welded, and quite good tubes have been obtained in this way. We also understand that solid drawn tubes of about the length you give, 4" to 10", can be produced by cupping sheet. We are sending you herewith a small sample of 3/8" welded tube, of which we have recently supplied a considerable number. Should you be handling the metal yourselves we have more fully detailed instructions for welding, soldering, annealing etc., which we should be pleased to give you. Assuring you of our best attention, and awaiting your further remarks. Yours faithfully, For G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} & J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} WEIR,LTD. A.J.Austly. encl. MM1.
