XHC4 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 606 EF. C. E.Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Mr. RWP Mr.Tay. E/HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.28.1.36. Experimental Brake Shoes. - Wraith. With a view to gaining experience for Wraith it is suggested that the Vulture should be fitted with rear brakes which embody the principles which may be applied to the Wraith. Accordingly we send N.Sch.4741 which shows wide steel shoes of shallow section with linings of .250" thickness instead of .375, heavily ribbed drums and no separate shoes for the hand brake. The shoes have two ribs and are intended to be stamped sideways and machined out between the ribs. We understand that the first pair will be made from hand forging The stampings and castings for the main and auxiliary shoes are interchangeable between wrapping and unwrapping sides but adjustment screws are provided on the outside only although the bosses must be stamped on both sides. Only one spring is provided for each shoe. N.Sch.4741 shows a temporary means of adapting the existing Vulture brake linkage to suit the use of a common pair of shoes for both foot and hand brakes.
