To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. FN. c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} X457 R1/M18.8.25. STEERING. X.8430 X.457 X.4565 We shall be pleased to see you at any time you think it profitable and convenient to come to WW. We are hoping for some general improvement in all the features which are being tested - that is - (1) the larger dia. of worm,(2) the slower pitched worm in any case for the present box,(3) the damped pendulum lever, and (4) the additional friction in the front axle system, either (a) as generated by the weight of the car by means of one or multiple surfaces, (b) as generated by spring pressure independent of the weight of the car (as suggested by Capt. Hallam and others), or (c) arranged as a separate unlubricated friction spring controlled, (as suggested by yourself and others), or (d) the hydraulic type carried on the front axle as we have suggested shall be carried out temporarily with the Houdaille damper. We wish BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} to note that some modifications will certainly be made to the present steering, and therefore the parts affected should be kept back. Probably we shall use as a minimum the slower pitched worm somewhere about .9 for the existing box with [strikethrough]skowexxpittxhed[/strikethrough] the damped pendulum lever. As a max. modification we may require the larger dia. of worm .72 pitch probably with the standard length of lever 9.5 friction damped, and also [strikethrough]xxxx[/strikethrough] possibly the addition of the fluid damper carried on the axle. As far as we can see this latter will demand the contd :- | ||
