With reference to the consumption of fuel, the Claudel-Hobson Carburetter and the Spanish Grand Prix, the following points should be noticed:-

With reference to the consumption on the Dietrich engine, this undoubtedly came from the fact that the Dietrich car was higher geared, and you will remember that in our Spanish cars our top gear was extremely low, and our average engine speed if we kept on the top gear would be rather higher than the speed for best horse-power, and to get the best consumption per Brake Horsepower, it is necessary to reduce the speed to approximately the maximum torque, which we get at about 1000 revs.

The whole question of consumption, outside using the weakest mixture possible with sufficient advance, comes from having high gear, so that the engine speed can be kept down so as to get the maximum compression and range of speed.
