Next, with the diaphragm in its lowest possible position (attained by pressing the rocker arm to the limit of its travel), tighten the screws alternately and securely.

Testing the Fuel Pump

To test the operation of the fuel pump when it is not mounted on the car, fasten a petrol pipe about 3 feet in length to the inlet of the pump, then by placing the lower end of this pipe in a tank of petrol and manipulating the rocker arm, observe whether there is a suction and pressure.

The pump should force fuel from the outlet opening with this method of test, raising the fuel at least 30 inches with a maximum of 40 strokes.

If the fuel does not appear at the outlet opening with this number of strokes, the pump will not function properly and should be dismantled to locate the cause.

A simple check of the suction and pressure may be made by holding the fingers over the inlet and outlet of the pump, and operating the rocker arm.

Whenever possible, re-install the pump on the car and check it by watching the priming action.

A pump correctly repaired and installed will prime itself; that is, show a flow of fuel at the outlet of the pump when the starter motor is operated, in about 20 seconds or less.

THE NEW HAND BRAKE LEVER

A “latch” type hand brake lever is now being fitted to the Models B, BF, and V-8 passenger cars.

This lever is of the “grip” type ratchet release, and is so designed as to bring the lever to a position accessible from the driver’s seat.

When replacing the original “button” release type lever, with the later “grip” type lever proceed as follows.

The original hand brake lever and ratchet assembly, together with the hand brake lever to cross shaft rod assembly BF-2853-B should be removed, and replaced with the later type lever assembly BE-2780 Fig. 50.

A longer hand brake lever to cross shaft rod assembly BE-2853, will also be required to replace the original rod assembly BF-2853-B to permit the brakes to be fully released when the new lever is in the off position.

Having installed the new type lever, it will be found necessary to extend the slot in the floorboard transmission cover plate rearwards ¼ inch to permit the lever to be pulled to the “full on” position without fouling this plate.

The slots in the rubber draught excluding pad, and the floormat should also be extended sufficiently to prevent any interference with the full travel of the lever.
