NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I (CONT'D)
4. Equally well damped as regards the friction in the springs alone, so that the RR. is better damped by the effect of the shock dampers.

20HP. RR. CONT'D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary}
Rather less well damped by the friction in the springs alone.

These comparisons assume an equal length of spring and deflection in each case. We do not know what these are on the Lanchester. Variations in the length and deflection, and consequently in the number and thickness of the leaves, will materially alter the characteristics of the suspension as regards side stiffness and internal friction.

In the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I, setting the springs eccentric would probably call for them being underslung, to reduce side motion when one wheel lifts, and this in its turn would induce rolling, and call for an anti-rolling device. We think we should lose more than we should gain, but we are not prepared to say that the result of this combination might not give a good impression under some road conditions.

As regards the 20HP., the semi-elliptics are required for the axle control, which has independent advantages. Setting the springs eccentric in this case makes no difference.

We have no information here as to the Lanchester equaliser, our illustrations not shewing one, which makes us think it has been added as a result of experience. If PN.{Mr Northey} has any such illustration we should much like to see it, but we do not know of any equaliser which does not spoil the springing to some extent, usually when one wheel is bumped (most frequent occurrence.)
