To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Maurice Molloy Esq., Lark Stoke, Ipsden, OXFORD. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler}15/JH.7.6.37. B-84-JD.{J. Draper - Frames} DELIVERED 20.2.37. Saturday June 5th, 1937. Proceeded by road to call on owner to investigate complaints of clutch jaggers. Arrived 10-15 a.m. and spent about two hours with owner. It is evident that he is a genuine R.R. and Bentley enthusiast, and is delighted with the chassis in every respect except for the clutch, which subject is an obsession with him. He has owned a Silver Ghost and three 20's or 25's. We tried this car for some 15-20 miles, Molloy driving at first. No exception can be taken to his method of driving. He endeavoured to demonstrate the reverse Jagger by backing onto rough ground slightly uphill, in some cases there was no jagger, and in other cases it was only slight, certainly not sufficient to justify a major complaint. I then drove, and demonstrated a number of up-hill reverses without any appreciable jagger, although at times it was apparent in a very mild form. After the run I had the car over the pit and found the prop. shaft damper setting was excellent, and smooth and even all round, and pedal mechanism all working smoothly. I then had a long talk with Mr. Molloy and we agreed that on the results of the mornings trials, there was really nothing to justify my bringing the car back to W., but he said on two or three occasions, when backing in confined spaces, he had had such bad jagger he had decided to sell the car, in spite of his voluntary statement that in every other respect it was the finest and most perfect car he had owned or even wished to own. | ||
