6003 June 14th 1937 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.21/AP. Messrs S.Smith & Sons Ltd., Cricklewood Works, LONDON N.W.2. For the attention of Mr.Dorer. Dear Sirs, After consideration of the modifications to the Ph.III. radiator thermometer scale which the writer discussed with your Mr.Dorer on Friday last, we are of the opinion that the best procedure would be to adjust the instrument so that the needle occupies a horizontal position (as at present at 100°C.) when the bulb is at a temperature of 106°C. and engrave the scale to read accurately, but not continue the numerals above 90°C. A red horizontal line could then be used to indicate loss of water at a temperature of approximately 106°C. We should very much like you to make us up a standard thermometer D.75625 with a dial engraved in this manner - with the minimum of delay - since this is for the purpose of juding appearance etc. it would be sufficient if the dial was hand painted as you suggested. Our official order for this thermometer and also for the Ph.III. thermometer to D.75953 with increased length flexible capillary will follow immediately - we should like the length of capillary increased by 3 feet over the standard length. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
