x202 DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}3/MA.19.11.34. BENTLEY REAR AXLE GR{George Ratcliffe}619. "Perfect Seal" Glands No.1751. Further to previous reports 20.10.34., 8.10.34., 1.10.34. After modifying the test axle to M.sch.4193 - No.5 (i.e. fitting a 1" "Perfect seal" gland on an enlarged - 1.100" - axle shaft, the gland being contained in an extension of the roller bearing housing) it was run on the rig (tilted at 30° to the horizontal) with oil at 50°C. circulating through the centre casing, the standard oil level being maintained. The gland nut was quite sound after :- (3 hrs. at 500 R.P.M. axle speed. (3 hrs. at 1000 R.P.M. axle speed. but apparently there was another source of leak which examination showed to be through the bridge piece slot cover. Modification to the casting, to delete the bridge piece slot is being considered, but meanwhile the existing type of cover plate is being improved. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/W.Bell. | ||
