Noise complaints due to excessive end play in front spring shackles.

X.433 RE END PLAY IN FRONT SPRING SHACKLES X.2628 We still continue to receive complaints of noise taking place in the above, even although we have made a special point of seeing that cars have been turned out with the end-play in these shackles within the drawing limits. These complaints take place largely on cars which are well thrashed and are used for high speed, touring or Continent etc. The case in point I am now referring to is that of Lord Rocksavage's car, 12-LW, which is a very light high speed car, and has been an excellent advertisement to us as regards its performances in France. This car came to the works prior to leaving for France before Christmas and the end-play in these spring shackles was made quite satisfactory. Ps. at out Nice Depot now reports that "there was .030" in the front spring shackle at the rear end of and about .020" in the front end of the springs". At the same time a complaint was also made of the excessive end play in the rear springs" on one side there was 2 m/m end-play in the spring seating bearing and 1 m/m on the other side; at the same time there was .030" in the front shackles of the rear springs". I bring this point to your attention as I certainly feel that some improvement can be effected to advantage as regards means of improving excessive wear causing disagreeable knocking and rattling of the car which takes place at present.
