(4) CARE OF CHLORIDE 6 BXE 5 BATTERY.

(A) Initial Charge of Battery received in dry condition.

If the battery is received with the chassis in a dry condition, first examine same and see that all terminals, connections, etc., are properly greased, to prevent corrosion. The most likely places at which corrosion may occur are on the positive terminals of each cell, on the washers (under the terminals) in contact with the top of the battery. Examine these places particularly and if any uncertainty exists about the greasing of these parts, these washers and the corresponding terminal nuts should be removed and given a bath in molten vaseline.

Having ascertained that the parts liable to corrosion are well protected, also that all terminal nuts are firmly screwed up, (do not perform feats of strength) fill each cell carefully with best battery acid of density 1250 to 3/8" above the tops of the plates, taking care not to spill acid on the top of the battery.

Allow the battery to stand over night to allow the plates to soak.

Charge battery at an ampere value equivalent to 1/16 of the rated ampere hour capacity on the 10 hour rate (i.e. 3 1/2 amperes, the capacity of the battery being 55 amperes hours) for 40 hours at least, but in any case, until all plates, both positives and negatives, gas freely. The charge should be as continuous as possible (amperes may be reduced
