To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to CJ. c. to Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} X.3456 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/LG30.7.20. X.3470. RE 40/50 CHASSIS BONNET. X.3456. We recommend that we adopt Ferodo bon-rest material instead of the brass wearing strips on the bonnet. This Ferodo material is very suitable for this job because it not only prevents a considerable amount of wear but it also makes the bonnets less liable to rattle. The only thing we are not quite happy about is the way we fix this Ferodo material. At present it simply replaces the brass strips and is rivetted round the edges of the bonnet by means of aluminium rivets. We have had no trouble with this fixing but we think, to take full advantage of the material, we should try and do away with the rivets and thread it through the slots on the support for the bonnet on the raidator and scuttle. This material is used on a very great number of cars and is fixed in the manner we describe. As this would mean an alteration to our radiators and fixing on the dashboard, we recommend that we should not wait for this but proceed to fit Ferodo as soon as possible.
