COPY. NA{Mr Nadin}3/S21120. November 2, 1920. Mr. Claude Johnson, Managing Director, Rolls-Royce, Limited, 15, Conduit Street, London, England. Dear Sir, We have found it advantageous to add Extension Test Pieces to the three following parts, in addition to those which have been treated this way in Derby:- (1) Rear Axle Tubes. We specify that a length of one inch or more shall be left on the end of these tubes when forged. This is cut off after they have been rough machined and heat-treated and a fracture made. (2) Connecting Rods. Every connecting rod has a piece of 1" long x 3/4" wide by 1/4" thick, forged at the little end. This is nicked and fractured after heat-treating. (3) Axle Pivots. A flat projection 1" long x 3/4" x 1/4" is made on the end which is threaded. This is nicked and broken off after heat treatment. We think you might like to consider adopting a similar scheme at Derby. Rolls-Royce of America Inc. (per) (Signed) Thos. Nadin. | ||
