Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}/WP2/AB11020. 1st October 1920.

We duly communicated the contents of your memo to Messrs. The Lucas Electrical Co.Ltd., and we are this morning in receipt of a letter dated 30th ultimo, reference HU/8, copy of which we give below:-

"With further reference to your communication "of the 16th instant, and ours of the 27th "instant, with regard to the E.575 Dynamo "returned off one of your experimental cars."

"We beg to say that we have now examined this "machine, and it would appear that the trouble "is probably due to one of the positive brushes "sticking in its holder. This in turn causes all "the current to pass through one brush, which "evidently became exceedingly hot, and sparked "badly, thus spoiling the surface of the "commutator. From this stage it will be seen that "it is an easy matter for the Carbon dust to "become embedded in the recesses between the "commutator segments, and short circuiting the "armature, which we think is the cause of the "over heated appearance of the windings."

"As we believe you are aware we have for some "little time been taking special care that the "brushes of these machines are quite loose in "their holders so that we do not think you need "anticipate any further trouble on these "machines from the above cause."

"Assuring you of our best attention at all times."
