KESTREL IB ENGINES: EXAMINATION OF BIG END SPLIT PINS.

We have now examined the split pinning of the connecting rod big end nuts of three Kestrel IB engines. Two of these Nos 187 and 207, were returned to the works specially for this to be done; the other, No.165 was returned for general overhaul. The condition of the pinning on each of the above engines was as follows.

K.IB. No.187 Hawker Hart. Hours Run. 264.

All the pins securing the forked rod nuts were found to be tight. Four blade rod pins were slack fitting, and on removing them, it was found that each was polished along the legs, showing that they had been vibrating in their holes, and all showed wear at the back of the heads.

One of them, from No.2 blade rod, which had been fitted with the legs cut short, so as only to extend over the flat of the nut on each side of the castellation, was particularly loose, and was badly worn down behind the head.

In addition to these, two more blade rod pins showed signs of wear developing behind their heads, although when tried for slackness appeared to be tight.

K.IB. No.207 Hawker Hart. Hours Run 333.

On examination, two split pins were found to be slack, one a forked rod pin and one a blade rod pin. The remaining, pins were all tight.

The loose forked rod pin was commencing to show signs of wear, whilst the loose blade rod pin was considerably worn at the back of the head.

K.IB. No.165. Hours Run. 142.

This engine was fitted with split pins to the blade rod bolts only. The condition of these pins was good, except in the case of one, which showed considerable wear behind the head.
