YOUR REF. OUR REF.
Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}9/LG. ACB/EW.

Date 13th March 1923.

For the attention of Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives.

Dear Sir,

We have to thank you for your letter of the 6th inst., which apparently has been considerably delayed in post, advising us that the C56. type plugs are giving trouble from sooting up and loose insulators.

The plugs which you advise as being returned have not yet been received, and until they arrive we cannot form any opinion as to the cause of the insulators becoming loose. Moreover it is not clear as to whether these are some of the most recent delivery of this type, which, as you will remember, were assembled in a modified manner in order to overcome - as we hoped - this defect.

With regard to the sooting up of the C56. plug, and your remark that the sleeve type insulator appears to be superior in this respect. This is probably because the mouth of the sleeve insulator becomes hotter, and therefore burns off the oil deposited thereon.
