We have altered the timing to its original setting, and we find that the car is more livelier, faster, and there is less roar from the carburettor. With the timing advanced one tooth, particulars of which you have, the car at 80 m.p.h. seemed to have finished, and appeared to be dead. With the later timing as stated, it is definitely more livelier, especially at 80 m.p.h.

We have also fitted the cotton duck washers to the Low Inertia Damper. The asbestos washers will not remain consistent, the initial load goes up and the actual slipping load decreases. Engine gear rattles were very bad. We have not had the half crankshaft period after fitting the cotton duck, and the gear rattles are considerably improved but not cured.

The oil pump has become very noisy of late, due I believe, to the condition the timing gears have got into.

We returned 60 JS.{Mr Johnson's Secretary} to Paris on Saturday, and generally it behaved very well during our run up. There was, on several occasions, a shake of the radiator but no severe bonnet knocks.
