PNEUMATIC BRAKE SYSTEMS.

From time to time cases have been reported of pneumatic brake failures in installations embodying our compressors where the pipe line layout has been such as to allow an accumulation of moisture to occur in the system.

We have not previously issued any recommendations on this subject because it has been considered the province of the aircraft constructor to provide the necessary safeguards, but it is felt that we can now render some assistance by issuing a recommendation for the most suitable type of layout.

The recommendation, which is shown diagrammatically on the attached drawing No. E.29175, is to fit a cooler and water trap in the line from the compressor to the air bottle. The cooler should be of sufficient capacity to reduce the air temperature at the water trap inlet to within 10° C of the surrounding ambient temperature, and the trap itself should be located at the lowest point in the system and be provided with a drain cock.

We should be glad if you would recommend this system to constructors using our compressors and we are preparing a descriptive leaflet on the subject which will be available shortly.
