1104. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}4/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 14th May, 1938. W.R. Boyle, Esq., Morris Motors Ltd., Engines Branch, Courthouse Green, COVENTRY. Dear Boyle, Is it possible for you to give me the following information ? I believe that you make your engine in much the same way as we do. We make all our own castings, we buy out the crankshaft and connecting rod forging, we cast and machine our own pistons, we buy out the rings, valve springs and valve forgings. We are trying to get a figure of merit for our Production people, and for comparison I would be interested to know how many of your own man hours it takes to machine and assemble a 25 H.P. engine. If for any reason this information is confidential and you cannot pass it on, I shall understand. By the way, what do you think is a fair price to pay for a 3¼ bore piston complete with rings and gudgeon pin? Talking of pistons, have you yet tried the L. Section ring for oil control ? Leylands have been running it on our recommendation, and are highly delighted with the results. Morris Commercial seem to be interested seriously in our aluminium tin bearings. Yours sincerely, | ||
