COMPLAINT REPORT NO. N.1641. The broken change gear gate from chassis WXA.35 was submitted to the Laboratory. Their report is as follows :- "Microexamination shewed a normal structure for this very soft type of material, without indicating any definite direction of grain. Hardness tests in the vicinity of the fracture gave 137/149 Brinell, and the material withstood a close bend test without breaking. Conclusion: The fracture was due to some impact of an accidental nature, after the chassis left the Works, and was not caused by normal usage. The cold bend tests prove that the material is satisfactory. The strength of the piece was not reduced, as it would have been if the grain of the material had run across the prongs.
