-2- (3) (Cont'd.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary}) Cadillac type C/M gears have run 130 hours without tooth failure, but after this time cracks had started in the splines at the boss faces, and run inwards up the web. 2nd speed bushes with loose thrust washers have worn enormously after 60 hours, but the 2nd speed universal ring still stays in gear. (4) Problems that remain. We have not yet overcome the trouble of the nuts at either end of the side shaft undoing themselves, but think this will not exist on the universal box when the gears are of the opposite hand. Adequate lubrication of the spigot gearing and 3rd speed bush at low speeds is still a problem. (5) Lubricants. During the dynamometer running we have taken the opportunity of testing various extreme pressure lubricants to get information about their sludge formation, and about their attack on steel and bronze parts. We are able to say that the life of a bearing is longer in an EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} lubricant than engine oil, and is also longer at lower oil temperatures. (6) Further testing. Information will be obtained on tooth loading equal to the universal box, and also on a roller spigot bearing. Buick type 2nd speed pieces will be tried very shortly.
