To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to BY/Shn. S E C R E T Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/LG13.5.24. X8790 EAC.111. DYNAMO & MAGNETO DRIVES. X411c xg100 xg120 We recommend that the Works are instructed, that when these Drives are erected, the serrated joints should be put together with graphite grease, afterwards, they should be oiled in the usual way. We find that the grease assists in making the joint more oil-retaining although, of course, care should be taken that there are proper oil retaining joints made in the same way as on the present std. 40/50 HP. car. With the position of Magneto as arranged for EAC.111.. it is very difficult to see the contact breaker points. It is only possible to see them with the aid of a small mirror. As regards the timing of the Magneto - we recommend that the procedure should be as follows - We must arrange that the tooth on the high tension distributor gear wheel of the magneto is marked. The position of this tooth should be such that it coincides with the mark on the inspection window when the contact breaker is breaking on no.1. cyl. retarded. It will be necessary for the driver to set his engine to the late ignition mark for magneto. He then slacks off the magneto pinion off the taper and turns the drive slowly until the mark on the distributor gear can be seen. If it is necessary to re-set the magneto contact breaker points, we recommend that the magneto should be removed for this purpose. EFC. is taking up the question of marking the teeth on the magnetos.
