X1029 FILE. 12.10.36. Girling Brakes. With reference to E's. memo. E.1/HP.30.9.36. (1) Undoubtedly a large proportion of the cost saving in changing to the Girling scheme as fitted to 1-B-IV, is due to the discarding of the separate hand brake shoes. We had to fight hard to get this done on Wraith (memo. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}10/JH. 27.3.36. etc.) and we say it is only possible if aluminium drums are used. The cost saving of £12.14.0d. is a very conservative figure, and the cost of the anti-judder parts must be added to it(£1.4.7d.). (2) The back plate of the bought out assembly quotation was ground to size making the water excluder a much finer job than R.R. made of it. It was a special job, and we should be able to beat the price easily. (3) We condemned the first Girling layout only on account of overheating - nothing to do with the wedge operation. (4) The floating fulcrum brake is probably less objectionable than E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} thinks, and since we have lived with fading brakes for years the change to a floating fulcrum and aluminium drums would be a marked improvement. However we are not using a floating fulcrum. (5) The cost of linkage which keeps the wedge from floating is included in the quotation. (6) Unless the bought out components gave perfect satisfaction in their present form we would not be in favour of using them: we would not ask for anything special. | ||
