MOVEMENT OF SHOCK DAMPER LEVERS P.II.

In order to compare the pumping action available at the shock dampers at various speeds, the following figures have been taken.

The apparatus used for measuring the movement was a dial rotated in one direction only, by a ratchet on a lever pivotted at the same centre. At the end of this lever a connection was made to the off side rear shock damper lever. The leverage was so arranged that the angular movement of the shock damper lever was shown directly on the dial. The time was measured with a stop watch for one complete turn of the dial, thus registering the time taken for 360° movement of the shock damper lever in an upward direction. The car used was 19-EX with low rating springs.

The figures were taken on 2 types of roads in both directions. Road surface "A" was the worst available around here and considered as bad as inferior French roads. On this road, owing to road surface, vissability and extent, greater speeds than 50 M.P.H. were impossible. Road surface "B" is a fast open road and has a bumpy and wary surface, similar to French main roads near Chateauroux. It will be noticed that a different time is recorded for the two directions, the left-hand side of both roads having an inferior surface on the outward direction.

Tests have been done with 3 damper loads. The first as standard cars, the second being the softest at present supplied to a customer, the third was the hardest and similar to that used on 25-EX (with low rating springs) to complete its mileage in France.
