1104 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}9/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 1st April, 1938. W.R. Boyle, Esq., Messrs. Morris Motors Ltd., Engines Branch, Godford Street, COVENTRY. Dear Boyle, Will you please convey my appreciation to the various members of your staff, who gave up so much of their time to us yesterday. We very much enjoyed our visit. I attach a print showing how we fitted a tail bearing to one of our experimental cars. As a matter of fact, the scheme was not so experimental as you might think as it ran quite satisfactorily for 12 months. We did not adopt it because we found a simple way of overcoming the trouble. I have been thinking over the engine you showed me, and I must say that on further consideration it still seems to me that either volumetric efficiency will be impaired due to temperature imparted by the exhaust valve and also the tendency to low speed detonation will be increased, or, alternatively, the exhaust valve will be difficult to cool. Doubtless in due course you will prove that this criticism does not agree with what happens in practice. Yours sincerely, | ||
