4634 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rml/LGl1.3.27. LORRAINE DIETRICH CAR. X3588 We attach a note re. the above. While we have recently been going over the question of torsional vibration dampers, we have come to the conclusion that the prospect of damping out the main critical period by any means but that of the frictionally mounted flywheel, are exceptionally remote. It therefore occurred to me that it would be of very great value to try our slipper wheel on the Lorraine and see if we can get rid of their very marked 'harmonics' by this means. We think that if we can definitely eliminate harmonics on this engine with a slipper wheel it would appear to be a type to go for i.e. the critical speed would never be attained. We are therefore trying to fit up a slipper wheel on this car to obtain this data. Under the circumstances, perhaps it would be as well to pay the import duty. We think it improbable that we should ever get hold of a 4-bearing car so near the size of our 20 HP. which has such admirable periods to play about with.
