re. 40/50 Car Belonging to Mr. Sidney - 40-PG.

With reference to your memo PN{Mr Northey}8/KW14.8.24. the principal work carried out when this car was in the Repair Dept. in May last was converting of engine to high compression, fitting high speed fan, shutters to bonnet, and torque reaction dampers.

Replying to your lettered paragraphs -

(a) The Radiator is of normal capacity having a matrix of 20.25" in height, which was standard for this type of chassis. The present standard is 21.25" matrix.

(b) The compression was increased from standard medium to high compression.

(c) The gear ratio is as originally supplied, 15 x 52.

(d) The high speed fan was fitted when the car was at the Works in May last.

(e) The bonnet was originally a plain polished one. It now has the standard side shutters.

With regard to the last paragraph of your memo, we certainly agree there is the possibility of overheating being affected by piston tightness, although very thorough tests are made to ensure that chassis do not leave the Works with tight pistons which are likely to lead to trouble of this description.

The modifications effected when the car was in the hands of the Repair Dept. i.e. (1) fitting of high speed fan, (2) fitting of shutters to bonnet, (3) Converting engine to high compression, are modifications which we do carry out in order to overcome complaints of overheating, and occasionally louvres are fitted to the bonnet instead of shutters. In addition these modifications are now incorporated on cars for certain Continental countries. The conversion of engine from medium to high compression is only carried out as a last resource.
