48390 FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} C. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re. PHANTOM WING STAYS. 48390 It appears that Sales wish to recommend head-lamps somewhat in the position of those on the Sports car for use in production, in which case to carry them off the wing stay is not practicable, and we shall have to continue to use our brackets off the cross member of the frame. We suggest that you get out a pair of headlamp brackets similar in design to those which we now use, but putting the lamps in the position of those on the Sports model, and send them to Sales so that they can fit up a car for observation. These brackets can be made in any temporary way you please. We can therefore go ahead with the standardisation of the wing stays without the lamp brackets. We pointed out to Sales that with the advent of axle control these wing stays become essential, and also that there should be little increase in cost to ourselves, in that the sheet metal wing stay saves the four drop forged sockets and taper plugs which we now give away on the chassis. As we believe the curvature problem of the wing stay has now been settled, all the difficulties appear to be removed, and there is nothing to prevent our going ahead with the standardisation.
