PHANTOM SPORTS STEERING COLUMN.

With reference to R1/M1.3.28. In addition to our report on the tests carried out on the column of the car in France we carried out static tests in parallel in the Expl: Dept: to see if frame deflection could cause appreciable steering column movement. These tests also compared the standard car and the sports, the latter having no tie rods and rubber engine mounting.

It will be seen that the column movement due to frame deflection is negligible, also that the sports frame is rather less rigid in torsion than the standard frame as we should expect. On this test we could not measure any difference with tie rods on or off.
