X 3362 During the absence of the staff here, I have erected the dynamo and had it running temporarily with a rope belt. I shall be glad if you will send me the proper belting for it to suit the pulleys already sent. The length is 7ft.6ins. but I presume that we can take a link or two out quite conveniently. So far, the only thing which is wrong is that the direction of rotation, is the opposite from what is required, and I had to run it with cross rope. I must furrage out the connections and find which have to be reversed. There is a little resistance on the outside at the end of the aluminium box which gets very hot. I assume that this is in series with a field winding. It may not do any harm, but it has suggested to me that we might have an external resistance away from the machine, which we can increase and increase until we find that the speed was sufficient to give the electromotive force. In this condition the regulator would have less to do, and the plant would be slightly more economical. The engine drives it and the pump all right, but so far I have only been able to obtain six amperes without the water pump. I anticipate getting at least ten amperes with a proper belt. (Contd.) | ||
