ORIGINAL FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to BG. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} C. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} DY.{F R Danby} P. 2. LIGHTER & STIFFER FLYWHEEL. E1/M27.2.31. X7010. 8300. Regarding your recent memo. with reference to the above, the stiffer crankshaft flange and flywheel we understand are being produced to LeC. 2874, of 16.2.31., (of which you have a copy,) and we are relying on the rear half of the flywheel in aluminium for a quick test to reduce weight and overhang. We attach herewith a print of the standard clutch and flywheel so modified from which it will be seen that the alterations should make a considerable difference. In the meantime we are working on the design to make a back plate in aluminium suitable for production. One remaining point is the bolting of the flywheel to the crankshaft. There are at present only 6 bolts in a flange of considerable dia., resulting in a circumferential pitch of about 3.5". We think that 9 bolts would be preferable even if the next size smaller.
