To Na.{Mr Nadin} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Copy to Pd. Copy to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} 29714 666 R9/P 27.7.14 COPY. [Handwritten on left margin: X872] Clutch (Instruction Book) With reference to the Instruction Book re the clutch, Mr. Haldenby supports my point of the view with reference to the wording of the Instruction Book re the lubrication of the clutch, and I wish that Mr. Platford, Mr Haldenby and yourself consult and agree for some change in the instructions which would probably improve matters. For instance, I suggest you should cancel the washing out of the clutch with pasaffin, also that you should cancel the expression that excess of oil would be likely to make the clutch slip, and insert instead, that it is desirable to have ample oil in the clutch, and the first trouble that would arise would be that the clutch would not be stopped owing to it being carried round by the excess of oil. Until this happens more and more oil can be inserted in the clutch. The quality of the oil is also not improved, and if the clutch is at all harsh, oil of an increased thickness (viscosity) can be used. Heavy gear oil would answer this description.
