EY. from hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Pa.{Mr Paterson} c. to EF. 96.FC x 2448 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LC9.6.20. X.2448 RE PISTONS. X.3704 We notice that on all low compression cars there is being fitted a 1/8" liner under the cylinders. We think it is quite inconsistent to go to the trouble of making two types of pistons high and low compression and then use liners. We believe the new pistons which have been designed have only 1/8" of difference in height between high and low compression whereas the high and low compression cars which are being despatched have 1/8" + 1/8" liner difference. This means that the low compression pistons should be modified so that the 1/8" liners are not necessary. When we come to the thermostat control, it will be necessary for the cylinders to be all approximately the same height because the pipe leading from the Thermostat to the Radiator will be a cant bend. If we contemplate using liners at all we shall have to make special bends to suit different liners. We mentioned this to Mr. Royce at one time and he said that as we had got different heights of pistons we should never now have the need to use liners.
