To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}
Mr. Wormald
Mr. Hives
Mr. Rowledge

Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}4/T.4.10.28.

With reference to your note RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}14/W3.10.28 re knock on the 20-HP Cars.

I want you to do as Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} suggests, put a car with this trouble up to the Exptl Dept. after you are sure that everything has been done to make the job right from a production point of view.

Probably this should have been done before you fitted a stiffer crankshaft. I am afraid, in the enthusiasm to get the job moving that all the officials on the production side occasionally try experiments to cure troubles and get the job away, but this is likely to lead to trouble as you are well aware.

You should confine yourself to a Repair Dept. and function on Standardised lines.

This should also apply to Test/Dept. and anyone who is dealing with the final acceptance of our production, in short, we should be certain that everything has been done to work to drawing and to make the/best of any part or unit that has been standardised, and if it does not satisfy you or the customer, it should then be submitted to the Exptl Dept.. I do not want anyone on the production side of the business to do Exptl work unless instructed by R..

I do not, however, want to limit your experience, and I think suggestions as to what you think is the trouble or the probable cures could be put down in writing so as to help to eliminate faults that are found after Exptl Dept. have standardized parts or units, and still do not satisfy your requirements.
