Dear Sir,

Thank you for your letter of May 8th, with reference to your Patent showing a means of providing upper cylinder lubrication.

Whilst there appear to be possibilities in your device, we do not favour upper cylinder lubrication on our particular type of engine, because we have a fully lubricated valve gear. We have satisfied ourselves that we get better results by supplying extra lubrication through a small hole in the connecting rod which projects oil on to the cylinder wall below the piston, than we do if we supply oil to the combustion chamber where the majority of it is burnt, and additionally there is a tendency for the sparking plugs to be fouled.

With unlubricated valve gear on many side valve engines, the position is of course different.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity of looking at this device.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
