| Oy9-E-22524 February 22, 1924. Mr. Claude Johnson, Rolls-Royce, Ltd., London, England. (Copy for attention of Mr.Royce " " " " Mr.E.Platford " " " " Mr.E.Hives) Dear Sir: Re: Proposal Sheet No. 37 Lubrication of Intermediate Camshaft Bearings. We have been troubled at intervals with squeaking camshafts on new cars and in some cases an investigation has found the shaft blued at the intermediate bearings. The bearing fits have been to the drawing limits and have even been tried .001 looser without improvement. When the bearings were oiled by hand the engine would run for some time without squeaking. By removing the tappet doors on Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 cylinders and running the engine, it was found that due to the shortness of the intermediate bearings, and the fact that the neighboring bosses of the cylinder holding-down studs shield them from the oil spray, the four intermediate bearings receive very little oil. The proposed modification takes some of the oil which flows down the cylinder wall and conveys it into the intermediate bearings. We have made this modification in the case of engines which squeaked and proved that it cured the squeak. Also by inspecting through the tappet doors we have seen that these bearings were well lubricated as soon as the engine started. The other three bearings appear to get sufficient oil. Oy.
