contd :- -2- 66°C - petrol starvation first becomes apparent at 62°C. Tests were repeated using an aluminium and asbestos covering on the side of the Autovac nearest the exhaust manifold, the maximum temperature attained was reduced to 58°C, and no petrol starvation could be observed. We deduce from this test that the excessive heat is due more to radiation from the rear exhaust manifold than to the general temperature under the bonnet. It is evident that some means must be provided to reduce the possibilities of this trouble occurring. The possible methods of doing this appear to be as follows :- (1) Heat shield round Autovac. (2) Heat shield over rear exhaust manifold. (3) Move Autovac further through the dash leaving as little of it as possible on the engine side. (4) Move Autovac outwards from the exhaust manifold (only very little movement in this direction is possible). (5) Insulate Autovac from dashboard by asbestos packing. The test results would be obtained by combining as many of the possible methods suggested. Our experience indicates the necessity for some immediate xx alteration.
