March 15th, 1939. Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., DERBY. for the attention of Mr.W.A.Robotham. Dear Sirs, CALORSTATS With reference to your complaint about the incorrect filling of Calorstats, there has been quite a bit of correspondence on the subject since, particularly in October of last year, one letter dated 6th Oct. Ref:- Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.4/JH. and our reply thereto puts the thing in a nutshell. You will see that complaints arose about the operation of these units using the previous filling and that it became necessary to interpret the instruction on your drawing regarding the performance, since then we have taken the instruction to mean that at 75 degrees cent. the bellows unit must have travelled .425" and that at 90 degrees the bellows should support a load of 27½ lbs. plus or minus 2 lbs. The Hexane filling we now use fulfils the specification much more regularly than the previous mixed filling, but since your running temperature is lower it is evident that the specification required modification. We regret that this has given you trouble and we will take steps to immediately rectify the 50 you are returning. In this connection it would seem that the specification should read "commences to open at 75 degrees under no load and supports 27½ lbs. plus and minus 2 lbs. at commencement of stroke". The travel of .425" will be given at some temperature between these. | ||
