3rd October, 1936.

Dear Mr.West,

In reply to your letter of the 2nd instant; the I.A.E. Research Abstract 8044, Class 217, came to me in the ordinary circulation of the abstracts.

It is not intended to take any action in the matter, but to us the abstract very obviously is a summary of some sales publicity article of one of the American battery maker's products.

The Kathanode principle has been on the market for many years for traction batteries, but it has not been employed to my knowledge for starter batteries until comparatively recently. You will notice in the motoring Press that Oldham are illustrating batteries embodying glass wool sheets. The glass wool sheet has undoubtedly considerable merit, but if Oldhams can use this principle, we can do so equally, and the fact that we are not so doing may be some indication that we prefer our dual separation of ebonite and wood.

With kind regards,

Yours sincerely,
E.C.MacKinnon

Do you know if there is any embargo on the use of soft rubber in components of aircraft? For instance, would objection be raised to a soft rubber shock cover over an aircraft battery?
