I notice there is considerable reference now to the die casting metal of zinc with a small percentage of aluminium, sometimes copper and other elements. Naturally this is not a light metal, and would not be of much use for aero work. It seems however to have some merits of cheapness combined with anti-corrosive properties which may make it useful to produce inexpensively many of the smaller car parts. Its specific gravity appears to be about 6.6 which is somewhere between aluminium and ordinary type metal. It is mentioned as good for petrol pumps, carburetter parts, and in cases where aluminium is unsuitable. One would imagine it was extremely tractable for die casting. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
