To EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} c. to Wr. [crossed out] c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Bn{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington}13/W161019. RE FRONT WHEEL BALL BEARINGS. You pointed out to me that the front wheels were being fitted with Hoffmann Ball Bearings of the type in which entrance grooves are cut in the races/in accordance with our pre-war practice. Mr. Bailey informs me that both types of bearings were in fact fitted indiscriminately before the War, but it is agreed by all that the right practice is to fit these bearings without these entrance grooves. I understand from the Order Dept. (Mr. Mills) that 100 of the right type of Ball Bearings were delivered a fortnight ago and a further 200 yesterday. You will therefore be able to ensure that all further cars delivered will be fitted with the right bearings. With regard to these cars which have been already delivered, perhaps you could ascertain whether we did in the past fit both types. Indiscriminately, in order that we may decide whether to change the grooved type bearings in these cars which you have delivered since the War. My own view is that in any case these should be changed. Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} | ||
