With reference to my memo EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}15/W18214, sent to Mr. Johnson, copy of which was sent to you, Mr. Johnson points out that the question of suitable oil for the gear boxes is a matter which should be found out by the Exp. Dept. and which should be settled at the Works. It is a fact that with our present gear boxes, the thickness of the oil has a considerable effect on the noise of the gears under power and the side shaft running light. It is also a fact that the thickness of the oil is also considerably affected by the heat. The oil we use is of normal thickness which we find gives the best results, but invariably we have made the oil thinner if by doing so we were able to produce a quiet side shaft without sacrificing materially the noise of the gear box under power and we have at times made the oil thicker, if we are able to produce satisfactory gears, without making noisy side shaft. This sheet must be filed with the correspondence to which it refers. | ||
