C. S. Steadman Esq.,
Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd.,
Derby.

Dear Mr. Steadman,

I thank you for your letter of the 4th of October on the subject of fan belts. As requested we are returning the Gates Vulco belt. I kept this for quite a long time in the state in which it collapsed on the fan but eventually I had to cut it to demonstrate to a Meeting here the collapse of the cords. I am returning it, however, as you request, and you will see that the two ends marked 'AA{D. Abbot-Anderson}' are a common cut in the middle of the "waisted" portion of the belt.

In view of your comments on the horse-power figures given in my previous letter, I have had these checked and to the best of my ability the following are the correct figures. First of all the formula is:-

Volts x amps x motor efficiency
---------------------------
746

For the first fan with the Gates Vulco belt the maximum figures obtained were:-

Volts 250 x amps 97 and the motor efficiency was 85%

Thus H.P. = 250 x 97 x 85 / 746 = 27.5 H.P. 24.6

The fan speed for this reading was 4,380 and the driving speed 4,440 R.P.M.

The average condition for the first fan and that obtaining when the fan collapsed is:-

Volts 248 x amps 94 with the speed the same as above.

This gives us an average consumption of 26.6 H.P. 23.8
