STRENGTH OF 'INDIA' FRONT AXLE. X5420 X5940

The tests carried out on this axle have not been very successful in shewing where it is weak in torsion, because when the load is applied, bending takes place as well as torsion, and it is difficult to determine the amount of permanent set due to each factor.

It would appear that a certain amount of bending is taking place across A - A, the top of the axle being weakest torsionally at B.

It will be seen that permanent set does not take place on the axle before a torque of 1000 lbs/ft. has been reached.

With the present 20 HP. distribution we do not expect the braking torque on each end of the axle to exceed 400 lbs.ft.
