HIGH SPEED STEERING WOBBLES. X457
We have carried out a further series of tests on Phantom and Silver Ghost cars.
Friction.
We tried friction inserted in the steering gear and independent of the weight of the car. This was arranged by means of two shock absorbers of the Hartford type inserted between the cross steering tube and axle as in the sketch.
We adjusted the shock absorbers until it took 12 lbs. at the steering wheel circumference to move the wheels with the axle jacked up. We could detect no definite improvement as regards steering wobbles. We increased the friction gradually when the wobbles decreased in violence until with friction equivalent to a load on 22 lbs. at the steering wheel contd:-
